Dental Sealants is a simple yet great advancement in dentistry. With very little cost or time, we can protect your teeth for many years from cavities or canaries using dental sealants. Dr. Young at EQ Dental is happy to discuss with you if sealants are an option you should consider.
How do Dental Sealants work?
Sealants get their name from the fact that they seal your teeth. Using a liquid plastic material that is safe in your mouth, we are able to seal your teeth, generally your molars, placing a layer between your teeth and food debris or bacteria.
This will significantly reduce the likelihood of particles settling in the grooves of your teeth causing decay. The process to place sealants is a painless one. Using a small brush, Dr. Young paints the liquid material onto the surfaces of your teeth which will then dry hard.
Who should get dental sealants?
Sealants are available to all of our patients, but we tend to look for the following signs when making the recommendation.
- Our child patients: Children are still learning and developing healthy oral habits. Many parents think that it is common for children to experience cavities and need dental work, but studies have shown that the health of your children’s teeth can determine the health of their teeth later. With dental sealants, your child may go many years without developing tooth decay or needing restoration work. This will help keep their teeth strong.
- Our patients who have problems with decay: Some patients just seem to experience more problems with decay. This may be due to poor hygiene habits, or just the unlucky draw of genetics. Dental Sealants can help reduce decay, keeping your teeth strong.
- Our patients who take regular medications: Some medications can cause havoc with other parts of your body, including your teeth. You may be more susceptible to bacteria or the inability to fight off bacteria. Sealants can help protect your teeth during this time, giving you strong teeth.
